Kathmandu: Mental health awareness among students has garnered significant attention in recent years, leading to the development of various initiatives aimed at supporting youth mental health.
As Prabha Maharjan notes, these efforts are crucial in addressing the mental health challenges faced by young people and creating a more supportive environment for their well-being. Notable organizations and programs have played key roles in promoting mental health awareness and providing support:
Active Minds,Founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon after the tragic loss of her brother to suicide, Active Minds is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health among young adults. Through peer-to-peer dialogue and interaction, Active Minds works to break the stigma surrounding mental health. With over 600 chapters across the country, the organization offers impactful programs such as the “Send Silence Packing” exhibit, which is a traveling suicide prevention display, and the “Healthy Campus Award,” which recognizes colleges that prioritize student well-being.
Born This Way Foundation, Established by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, this foundation is focused on youth mental health and empowerment. It conducts research on youth mental health perceptions and access to resources, underscoring the need for improved mental health education and stronger support systems. The foundation advocates for a broader cultural understanding of mental health and its importance in young people’s lives.
Jack.org, A Canadian nonprofit organization founded in 2010, Jack.org focuses on youth mental health and suicide prevention. It runs programs like Jack Chapters, Jack Talks, and Jack Summit, which engage young leaders in mental health advocacy throughout Canada. By empowering young people to lead mental health conversations, Jack.org aims to remove stigma and create a supportive network for mental health discussions.
Hope Squad, Launched in 2004, Hope Squad is a school-based peer support program that trains students to recognize signs of mental distress among their peers and seek help from adults. Originally created in Utah, Hope Squad has expanded across the United States and Canada. Its mission is to reduce youth suicide rates by providing proactive peer intervention and building a strong network of support among students.
These organizations represent the growing movement to address mental health challenges among students by fostering supportive communities, increasing awareness, and providing accessible resources. Their work is crucial in combating the stigma surrounding mental health, promoting open dialogue, and ensuring that young people receive the support they need to thrive.
