Tanka Timilsina: From Village Radio to Millions of Hearts, the Digital Age’s Deuda Star

August 19, 2025

Kathmandu, Aug 19:  Born in a remote village of Achham, singer Tanka Timilsina has carved a unique identity in the Nepali music industry after a long struggle.

By blending the traditional Deuda folk tunes of Sudurpaschim with modern music, he has attracted millions of listeners across the country and beyond.

Since childhood, Timilsina was drawn toward music through radio. With his elder brothers working in India for employment, he carried the burden of family responsibilities while helping his parents with farming and household chores alongside his studies.

After completing his SLC, he defied family pressure and moved to Nepalgunj, where he began his professional journey through local radio.

In 2014 (2071 BS), Timilsina collaborated with China B.k on the song “Juni Juni Timilai Maya Garchu,” but it failed to gain attention. Later, in Kathmandu, he recorded songs with well-known singers, yet those too were lost in the crowded market.

To sustain himself, he performed at Dohori night venues. Feeling discouraged, he made what he thought might be his final attempt in 2018 (2075 BS) by releasing “Sansani.” The song turned into a breakthrough hit that changed his fortune.

Following its success, Timilsina focused on giving Deuda music a modern touch. Songs like “Meri Champa,” “Man Maya,” “Mugu Rara Talmaima,” “Saibaj Saibaj,” and “Ae Pyaru” created waves in the Nepali music scene.

He had already started his YouTube channel back in 2014, where he began releasing his own creations. Today, that channel has grown into a digital empire with more than one million subscribers.

Alongside his musical career, Timilsina also nurtured dreams of transforming his village. In 2022 (2079 BS), he ran as an independent candidate for mayor in the local elections. Although he did not win, the campaign gave him a deeper understanding of the realities of village life.

Today, Tanka Timilsina is not only a successful artist in Nepal’s digital music landscape but also a source of inspiration for those rising through struggles. His songs have captivated millions of listeners, making him a shining star in the digital sky of Nepali music.
